In 2025, we will see a trend of 5G being available for almost every price range
Redmi launched a new budget 5G phone in India, it’s the Redmi A4 5G (We’re already on the fourth generation of these???). However, it may remain exclusive to Indian users unless Xiaomi Philippines or Global says a word about it.
Currently, if you want a 5G phone that’s not so heavy on the pockets, it’s the ZTE Blade A75 5G in partnership with Smart. It is nice we get more options though, and we can definitely see a trend of 5G being available for everyone by next year.
The Redmi A4 retains a familiar design we’ve seen since the Redmi A1. Familiarity is what gets consumers and make them adapt easily. It is a double-edged sword, however. Retaining a similar design might also mean that the “upgrade” is more of a sidegrade and not something substantial. So, if you own a Redmi A3, there should be no reason for you to get the A4 unless you want 5G connectivity.
The phone features a fairly large chin and bezels with a waterdrop notch. The display measures 6.74″ and comes with 120Hz refresh rate and HD+ resolution. Just like Redmi A3, the phone boasts of a back material that is composed of glass, so it feels more expensive than what it actually is. Next up, the phone has a 50MP camera alongside a 5MP selfie shooter. The second camera at the back is merely a filler.
Perhaps the most interesting part about this phone is the chipset that Xiaomi decided to use. They did announce that they will be the first to use this chip but did not specifically discuss which phone will use it, not until now.
Typically, you would find a MediaTek Dimensity chip here but instead, we get the Qualcomm Snapdragon 4s Gen 2, which is much more expensive to obtain. That’s why we’re impressed that this phone only costs INR 9,499 (~PHP 6.6K), and that’s for the 4/128 variant. This chipset is a toned down Snapdragon 4 Gen 2, like most Qualcomm chips under the “s” subseries. Its main features include UFS 3.1 support and a 4nm manufacturing process. However, it is toned down with the fact that it now supports only LPDDR4X RAM instead of LPDDR5X and every core is downclocked to 200MHz less compared to the base chipset. Also, unlike the Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 2, the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 has reduced camera resolution support (84MP vs 108MP).
The phone has a 5,160mAh battery with a curiously fast 33W fast charging. If this were from other brands, you’d be lucky to get 18W. In terms of connectivity and ports, you’re looking at a USB-C port, a 3.5mm jack, a single speaker, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5.1, and NFC. The phone appears to not have an IR Blaster, unlike many of Xiaomi’s phones.
The phone comes in two colours: Sparkle Purple or Starry Black. There is also a 4/64 version that costs INR 8,499 (~PHP 6K). As we mentioned earlier, Xiaomi Philippines has not decided whether they will bring this phone to the Philippines or not. However, if you’re an Indian techie reading this, then you may get this phone via Flipkart.
