OVER THE EDGE: MediaTek announces the Dimensity 9200+

Now with more steroids injected!

The next generation of flagship phones is coming soon and MediaTek is preparing for that. Here’s the Dimensity 9200+, an improved version of the Dimensity 9200 that is even more aggressive in terms of performance. Chipsets just get better and better everytime.

The chipset’s architecture is done by ARM and is designed in a 1-3-4 setup consisting of a single Cortex-X3 ultra core at 3.35GHz (overclockable), three Cortex-A715 super cores at 3GHz, and four Cortex-A510 efficiency cores at 2GHz. It uses the all-new Immortalis G715 GPU and is manufactured via a 4nm TSMC process in its second generation. The chipset is very similar to the Dimensity 9200 as the name entails but with higher clocks making it ideal for gaming. Ray tracing and AI rendering are also supported.

In terms of display, the chipset can support resolutions of up to WQHD+ with 144Hz refresh rates, or FullHD+ with refresh rates of up to 240Hz.

Its AI capabilities are handled by MediaTek’s custom APU called APU 690, a sixth-gen APU intended to enhance photos and videos and create professional-grade bokeh effects during post-processing.

In terms of connectivity, you get the latest Wi-Fi 7 connectivity as well as Bluetooth 5.3. Of course, you have sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G connections too. The chipset also supports Wi-Fi/Bluetooth Coexistence 3.0 which the company claims to lower down Wi-Fi latencies to just 46%. There’s also 24-bit/192KHz audio support.

Camera capabilities are provided by the ISP inside called MediaTek Imagiq 890. This sophisticated ISP supports 8K video and up to 4K@60fps video capture and up to 320MP in a single sensor. Its built-in RGBW sensors also provide a 30% improvement in light sensitivity versus the Dimensity 9000 so images are brighter yet sharper than ever. This is the same ISP used for the default Dimensity 9200.

Finally, MediaTek 5G Ultrasave 3.0 makes usage of 5G cellular services more efficient by saving battery power.

The chipset is expected to be released sometime this month with manufacturers like Xiaomi, Realme, ASUS, and Motorola expressing interest.
