The Sky Will Always Be Blue: SKY Cable to End Operations on February 26

Cable is truly dead.

For every Filipino, “Sky Cable” is (or was) a huge household name. Before the advent of the internet, when you had cable, you were like the richest kid in the block and you could access several channels you would never think you could watch if you just watched free TV, including Discovery, National Geographic, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, and even Animax. It’s like a new world to behold that you will never go back to Free TV after this.

Times change and more and more people got access to those privileged paid channels easier now thanks to streaming services and the internet. After 30 years of serving, Sky Cable will soar higher and end its service on February 26th.

The decision was made after PLDT, Inc acquired the company for PHP 6.75 billion. This initially only included their Broadband services but has since expanded to their cable division. The acquisition was approved by the Philippine Competition Commission. PLDT said that, with this acquisition, they can now serve in areas where the company is absent.

Sky’s former parent company, ABS-CBN Corporation said that the transaction was approved under “subject conditions”. Furthermore, the media conglomerate will disclose more information to the public regarding the acquisition once it becomes available.

Fly high, SkyCable! We will miss those thirty years of service.
