Mediatek MT9638, a 4K-capable processor for TVs, has been announced


Mediatek, a semiconductor company, is mostly known for their smartphone chipsets. Although they also make chipsets for other electronics, such as televisions and set-top boxes.

Two days ago, Mediatek announced a new chipset that is 4K capable, the MT9368, intended for Smart TVs.

According to the press release on Mediatek’s website, the chipset supports “AI Super Resolution”, “AI picture quality” and “AI Voice Assistant”. These AI-based features enable displays to adjust to 4K native resolution, improve video quality, and alongside MEMC, smoother high-res videos.

The processor (Mediatek calls it APU, which stands for “AI Processing Unit”) comes packed with a multi-core Cortex A-55 CPU clocked at 1.5GHz, up to 4K@60FPS resolution, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 codec support, and HDR10 support.

As for the sound, the chipset supports Dolby Atmos surround sound and DTS Virtual X.

For connectivity, the chipset has support for HDMI 2.1 and USB 3.0 interfaces. It also supports Wi-Fi 6 connectivity and up to four far-field microphones.

The chipset is expected to hit the market by Q2 2021
