There are some compromises which not everyone may be a cup of tea of.

vivo Philippines recently announced the Y29, a budget phone touting a HUGE battery and of course, a stylishly luxurious design. It even resembles one of the company’s mainstream phones, the V29 complete with the Aura Ring Light and colour. It also has a modest price, at PHP 8,999 (8/128). However, not everything is cupcakes and rainbows. Practically speaking, any business would cut cost where necessary to maintain that good price point. Certain for sure that vivo is not cutting it on the design department.

Aside from the 6500mAh battery, the phone is also charged via a 44W USB-C 2.0 port. A standard for vivo phones at this price point. The phone comes in Marble White or Espresso Brown, and the brown colour feels unique for the brand. The display features a dot notch which houses the 8MP selfie camera.
Speaking of cameras, the back has a 50MP primary sensor and a 2MP camera that is less useful. Nothing noteworthy here. All is standard.
The Vivo Y29 features SCHOTT Glass which the company claims is 60% stronger than regular glass. In addition, it has an IP64 rating, protecting it from dust and levels of rainwater, plus a 5-star SGS rating. Physically speaking, the phone is built to last.
You read the title. It is quite an impressive phone when you look at it on paper. See, a modernistic look, a huge battery, and fast charging. What more could you ask for? Well… the thing is, we haven’t even mentioned the chipset yet.
While the phone is built to last physically. It should also be able to do read basic tasks rapidly as users would most likely keep a phone with them for a couple years. Phones are pricey and an investment. Therefore, whatever price you’re paying, whether that would be a premium flagship or a budget phone, it should be worth your while.
With that said, the Vivo Y29 comes with a disappointingly weak chipset, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 685. While still viable for today’s standards, it is getting old as years fly by. Read times is also not that impressive due to it using eMMC 5.1 storage despite the chipset supporting UFS 2.2, which reads tasks faster and allowing phones to run smoother. The phone does have a higher storage trim (8/256) but the price is heftier, at PHP 10,999. Phones within this price range already have UFS 2.2 storage and a higher-res display.
The display is also less than impressive. While many other budget phones now opt for a 1080p 120Hz display, or a 60Hz AMOLED, the Vivo Y29 comes with a questionable compromise of using 720p IPS LCD (1608x720px) measured at 6.68 inches.
If you’re after a phone that is all about the looks and simplicity, the Vivo Y29 is a good choice for you. However, if you want a phone that can run Wuthering Waves while rolling for your favorite waifu, skip ahead.
The Vivo Y29 is now available at all vivo authorized concept stores nationwide and via Lazada and Shopee.
