Philippines Represent! Jose Rizal is a Playable Leader in Civilization VII

With a unique “Pambansang Bayani” bonus as well. They know how happy we are when being represented.

Civilization is a series of turn-based RTS (Real Time Strategy) games that involves players building a civilization and fighting others, just the way history did it. It is based on famous historic empires such as the Roman Empire, Spanish Empire, and the Russian Empire. If you’ve played games like Age of Empires, then Civilization may be that missing bread in this bread-and-butter sandwich. The game involves you selecting a nation leader with various unique bonuses in order for you to be successful. If you’ve seen ads for a particular mobile game, then Civilization plays similar.

It was developed by Sid Meier in the 90s and has since been passed on to many developers and publishers, such as 2K Games. It is currently on its seventh main installment. And for Civilization VII, Firaxis Games has introduced many new leaders, including Jose Rizal. *Scream like a proud Filipino here*.

His introduction marks an important achievement towards Filipino representation in the global gaming scene, allowing for other developers, whether that be indie or Triple-A, to recognize Filipino history, culture, and society.

The game has many famous historic figures as part of its leader roster, including Catherine the Great, Mahatma Gandhi, Julius Caesar, and Charlemagne. Now, Jose Rizal is part of those ranks! Previously, Filipino fans have added Jose Rizal unofficially through mods and have been asking to add the national hero into the game.

This is the official description of Jose Rizal in Civilization VII:

“Long regarded as a hero of the Philippines, José Rizal was a passionate defender of the dignity and autonomy of Filipinos. He first gained his reputation as a political activist in Europe, criticizing the Spanish rule of his homeland, and though he advocated for peaceful reform and equal rights, Rizal was eventually tried and executed by the Spanish. Yet his revolutionary spirit could not be contained, and has inspired Filipinos ever since.”

Jose Rizal’s main attributes consist of garnering happiness for the player’s civilization, which could symbolize how Filipinos are always joyful, positive, and resilient, no matter the situation. This has been a trait Filipinos have since Spanish-era times. This is especially highlighted with his bonuses during Narrative Events. Players can gain additional Culture and Gold per age, and has increased celebration and happiness during these events.

Civilization VII is set to be released on PC, XBOX ONE, XBOX Series S/X, PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch. The game is also going to be available via the Epic Games Store and Steam. It will be released on February 11, 2025 globally. Also, cross-play multiplayer is fully supported. So that means if your friend is playing on a PS4 and you’re using an XBOX One, it would work.
