Samsung unveils the Z Flip 4. It now comes with a larger battery and improved overall user experience

Today’s Galaxy Unfold is all about ergonomics!

The annual Galaxy Unfold event brings about exciting new devices yearly. It is also Samsung’s most anticipated event and this year, Samsung announced the successor to the popular modern flip phone, the Z Flip 4. This series is known for its clamshell folding mechanism where it folds vertically instead of horizontally unlike the Z Fold series. These also come with a smaller rear panel for notifications. It takes time to perfect a foldable and even Samsung had its ups and downs.

Oh, one important thing to note for the Z Flip 4 is the redesigned hinge. This should make it less visible when constantly folding the phone and will also add to its durability.

The Z Flip 4 promises a better user experience and, just like the Z Flip 3, comes in a wide array of colours. The phone itself has a 6.7in. foldable AMOLED 2X panel with 120Hz refresh rate and FHD+ (2400x1080px) resolution. It is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ and IPX8 water resistance.

There are a total of three cameras. Two at the back and a single 10MP selfie camera situated on the punch hole notch. The two cameras are located on the top left, just beside the 1.9in. AMOLED secondary screen. Both of these rear cameras have 12MP resolution which serves as the primary and ultrawide cameras respectively. These cameras are also used on the Galaxy S20 and S21 as well as the Z Fold 3. The primary camera has OIS.

The phone launches with Android 12 with Samsung’s OneUI 4.1 skin on top. This version of OneUI is optimized especially for the Z Flip 4 and comes with exclusive features like FlexMode. This allows you to use apps like Google Meet and Microsoft Teams using the top or bottom screens while either two will serve as secondary. Another noted feature is FlexCam. This allows you to take selfies using the secondary screen. With Samsung’s partnership with Meta, photos taken using this smaller screen are optimized for use on WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram.

The phone gets a 3700mAh battery, an upgrade over the Flip 3’s 3300mAh. The Flip 3 gets 15W fast charging while the Flip4 gets 25W, which is a nice upgrade over last year’s. The form factor may be the one condition why Samsung could not pair the phone with a far larger battery.

Did we forget to mention the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset the phone comes with? This chipset is paired with 8GB RAM and storage options between 128, 256, and 512GB. Like most flagships nowadays, the Flip4 misses out on expandable storage.

It is available for pre-order via Samsung’s website. In the Philippines, the 8/128 option starts at Php58,990, the 8/256 at Php62,990, and the 8/512 at Php69,990. It comes in a variety of colours, including Bora Purple, Graphite, Pink Gold, and Blue.
