Truly a gaming phone in every aspect
Two days ago, ASUS revealed the ROG Phone 6, which was first announced in early June, approximately a month before the unveiling. It retains several features the ROG Phone 5 series was known for, such as an advanced cooling system, shoulder pads, and RGB lighting.
A pattern of the newer ROG Phones is that the regular and Pro variants share identical spec sheets. Their differences, aside from pricing, are their storage configurations. Specifically, the Pro variant comes with the highest RAM/storage configuration. The ROG Phone 5 Ultimate, for instance, came with 18GB RAM and 512GB internal storage.
One major differentiation between the two is that the ROG Phone 6 Pro has an extra 2in. OLED screen at the back. Meanwhile the regular ROG Phone 6 comes with illuminated RGB backlights instead.
Both phones are equipped with a flagship-tier 6.78in. FHD+ (2448x1080px) SAMOLED screen with 165Hz refresh rate and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection. It is also IPX4 splash resistant.
The cameras are a significant upgrade as well. Normally, gaming phones simply do not prioritize cameras and so most of them opt for cameras you can see on cheaper midrangers. Here, the ROG Phone 6 and 6 Pro come with the flagship 50MP Sony IMX766 primary camera with OIS. Aside from that, both are complemented by two midrange cameras, namely a 13mp ultrawide and a 5mp macro camera. The front camera is a 35mm 12MP Sony IMX663 sensor sitting on top of the bezels. It’s not a punch-hole.
As expected, the phones come equipped with a 4nm TSMC-manufactured Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. The manufacturing process is an important factor in determining how well it manages certain tasks before it gets too hot. Both have an advanced graphene-based cooling plate. In addition, you can also purchase separately two accessories to further help keep the phone cool and to game on. These are the AeroActive Cooler 6 and ROG Kunai 3 gamepad. The regular ROG Phone 6 can be configured for as high as 16GB RAM and the ROG Phone 6 Pro at 18GB RAM. Both phones top out at 512GB UFS 3.1 internal storage.
There is a 6000mAh battery split into two 3000mAh cells. There is a battery at the bottom and another at the side. Like the previous series, the charging speed is capped at 65W charged on a USB-C port. There is also an extra port for you to connect accessories with. It runs ROG UI based on Android 12, a UI specifically tailored for ROG Phones. Both phones also support Quick Charge 5.0 and Power Delivery
Unlike many other flagships that constantly remove features, ROG Phones keep all of them. Yes, including the 3.5mm jack! That’s in addition to the front-facing stereo speakers with DiracHD sound, Hi-Fi audio, Dolby Atmos certification. It also has the AudioWizard software so you can configure the sound as comfortable as you like as it can keep multiple sound profiles. ROG also has its own TWS earbuds accessories. These are the ROG Cetra and ROG Cetra Pro.
It has 5G services, NFC, Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6/6E connectivity, and support for Lossless wired and wireless audio with Bluetooth LE and Qualcomm aptX audio. Both phones have an optical in-display fingerprint sensor, shoulder/trigger pads, and grip press.
The ROG Phone 6 starts with 12GB RAM and 256GB internal storage. It does not have prices yet for the Philippines. It costs EUR 999 (~Php 57.1K). Meanwhile, the ROG Phone 6 Pro with 18GB RAM and 512GB internal storage would cost you EUR 1,299 (~Php 74.3K). We will wait for ASUS Philippines’ official announcement as the ROG Phones released here are actually slightly more affordable than the ones sold in Europe.
The phones will start entering store shelves this August.
