2800mAh in 2025 is insane.

Apple has been rumored to release an ultralight version of its iPhone this year, as part of the highly anticipated iPhone 17 series. Part of the renewed excitement was that the series would come in a fresh new design plus the new “Air” branding which was only available to the iPad series.
The new iPhone 17 Air is Apple’s answer to the rising trend of ultralight and thin smartphones. Phones that have thin widths of around 5-6mm. The iPhone 17 Air is most likely the replacement to the compact “Mini” series which did not fair well in sales numbers as Apple had hoped. The rumor mill already had suggestions of what the design of the new iPhone 17 Air is going to be, as shown above.
Another leak might disappoint you. Well, actually, it is disappointing. The iPhone 17 Air is tipped to have a small 2800mAh battery. If this was 2016, that would have been quite impressive. While many other brands choose to increase the capacity to absurd lengths, such as going as high as 7000mAh, Apple here is going to a more conservative approach.
If these leaks are true, then your latest iPhone might not even last a day. An oddball move since there are many many jokes and complaints about iPhones dying before a day’s use. This rumor, if proven true, is just Apple kicking the bucket even harder.
Companies are able to stretch the battery capacity in a smaller frame thanks to advancements in Silicon-Carbon (SiC) technologies, which was spearheaded by Honor. This allows companies to essentially fit more important parts without sacrificing battery life. This may also be the case for the iPhone 17 Air, further raising questions about the not-so-good battery capacity.
To compare, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, a slim variant of the Galaxy S25, has a 3900mAh battery and that phone is only 5.8mm thick. 2800mAh is just pretty small and completely unjustified to this year’s standards.
Do note these are just leaks and Apple typically does not reveal its iPhones’ actual capacities, sticking with marketing terms such as “lasts 4x longer than previous iPhone models” or “99h of playback time”. You may also see that many iPhones have unusual capacities in many spec sheet websites, such as GSMArena. Here’s to hoping for a bigger battery since iPhone fans have been requesting it for so long already.
