Tecno is bringing in the next generation of their smartphones in the Philippines. The Tecno Spark 30 is a smartphone that is bringing headlines within our colleagues thanks to its use of the Sony IMX662 sensor. A flagship camera (flagship for 2021 standards) brought down to a more budget-friendly price.
The phone here comes with a very familiar design that has been going rounds lately. First with Oppo’s Reno 12F then Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 14C, and now we have the Spark 30. We also see a pattern here, wherein the Reno 12F is the most feature-packed, the Redmi 14C being the cheapest, and the Spark 30 sits perfectly in the middle. The phone comes in Astral Ice and Stellar Shadow colors and both look luxurious in quality.
The Tecno Spark 30 comes with a 6.78″ 90Hz FHD+ (2400x1080px) IPS LCD screen, which is okay for this kind of phone. The phone is also IP64-rated, which means it is practically immune to dust particles and can survive droplets of water splashing through it.
No matter how nice a phone looks, it always boils down to the performance, so what have we got? Well, the Spark 30 comes with a MediaTek Helio G91 chipset. Now, you might be thinking “Wow, that’s underwhelming”. Before you jump to that conclusion, do note that it will only be underwhelming if its price does not deliver in comparison with its specs. Tecno Philippines has not told us yet how much this fire of a phone would cost. However, the phone does come with 8GB RAM and either 128 or 256GB ROM.
The Helio G91 is essentially an upgraded Helio G88, although very slightly. It still is weaker than the legendary Helio G90 and G90T. Ironic, isn’t it? You’ll be disappointed to hear that this chip still supports eMMC 5.1 storage, so expect slower read times versus UFS 2.1 or UFS 2.2. Although, you’re not buying the Spark 30 for its performance, you buy it because it uses a flagship-grade main camera.
Even if it does use a flagship camera, the Sony IMX662, having a balance of both is still a better option. We believe Tecno only used the G91 for cost-cutting purposes, but still getting the job done, which would be understandable once we figure out its price. Practically speaking, this 50MP rear camera is the only one that is available for this phone, aside from the 13MP front camera. The other camera is not specified and we reckon it is a 2MP auxiliary sensor.
As for the battery capacity, the phone has a 5000mAh battery with 18W fast charging. Yes, the charger comes included with the retail box. The phone also boasts real stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos. Talk about overkill!
