Before the Year Ends, Tecno Releases the Spark 20, a Budget Phone that Speaks “iPhone at Home”

Looks like that’s Transsion’s design language for the time being.

We’ve all had our fair share of iPhone-inspired (or bluntly, iPhone clones) designs. Xiaomi did it at one point, so did Realme and Huawei. Now it’s Transsion’s turn. After the release of the Itel S23 Plus, it seems like they’re using this type of design for a while, for all of its brands including Tecno and Infinix.

We’ve discussed how decent the Tecno Spark 20 Pro is, including a 108MP primary camera and a sleek-looking design, plus 120Hz IPS LCD screen. Now, we’re looking at its more budget-oriented sibling, the Tecno Spark 20.

Like the Pro variant, the phone has a design reminiscent of newer iPhones but also this one has a ridiculously large chin and side bezels, an effect of its budgeted nature. The display is also weaker, coming with a 90Hz HD+ (1600x720px) IPS LCD instead. Like every new Tecno phone, the company jumps the wagon by adding its own flavour to Apple’s Dynamic Island called Dynamic Port.

Inside you’ll find the good ol’ MediaTek Helio G85 chipset with 8GB RAM (and 8GB virtual) and 256GB ROM. The phone is also expandable via a MicroSD Card. Tecno really called it a “gaming processor”. While true (since that’s what the “G” stands for), this chipset is now used for ultrabudget phones, and the Helio G99 has replaced it when it comes to budget gaming performance.

Before we get out of the phone again to tour the cameras, let’s take a look at the battery which has 5000mAh capacity and 18W fast charging via a USB-C 2.0 port. Nothing unusual here.

Going back outside, there are three cameras. A 32MP at the front and a 50MP at the back with a complementary, or dare we say it, a useless AI lens.

The phone has an IP53 rating so if it gets splashed with water or sprinkled with some dust, it’s at least protected. Tecno says it has a stereo speaker system but the renders don’t show that. Instead, to compensate, it comes with up to 400% artificial volume, a gimmick we’re seeing with newer budget phones to make up for a lack of stereo speakers. It is still DTS certified however.

The phone is available in various colours including Gravity Black, Cyber White, Neon Gold, and Magic Skin 2.0 Blue. It is available for a price of PHP 6,999 but it’s currently down to just PHP 6,199 via Shopee.
