IFA 2023: HONOR Showcases the Magic V2 Foldable Phone

Oh, they also revealed a phone purse. No, a phone that IS a purse! That’s for a separate article though.

During the IFA 2023 event in Berlin, Honor revealed two concept phones: their second-generation foldable phone, the Magic V2 (not counting the Magic Vs), and the other the V Purse which is intended for fashion designers in mind and looks literally like a purse!

Starting with the Magic V2, the company’s CEO, George Zhao, revealed several things during the event, one of them is its price in China but not its price in Europe or in global markets.

As a folding phone, it comes with two separate displays. Unfolded, you’ll find a 7.92″ QHD+ (2344x2156px) LTPO3 OLED screen with 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and also supports styluses. When folded, there is a 6.43″ LTPO3 OLED screen with 120Hz refresh rate and FullHD+ (2376x1060px) resolution.

Just like the Magic Vs, the foldable phone is incredibly thin and light, measuring only 9.9mm (that’s thin for a foldable phone) and weighs only 231 grams, beating the Huawei Mate X3’s 11.08mm thickness. The hinge is also reinforced and could withstand up to 400,000 folds (or about 10 years), according to Honor’s claims.

It has low to zero chances launching in North America but it will launch in Europe’s key markets like Germany and the UK. There, the tablet comes in three colours. First, the metallic black, then the rest are made with vegan leather, labelled as “Silk Black” and “Silk Purple”. The Ultimate Gold and Ultimate Black (Far right corner) won’t be launching outside of China.

As a flagship, it is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset with 16GB RAM + 256GB ROM. The Ultimate variant has 1TB storage, matching most budget computers.

With how thin the phone is, you probably think they can’t fit a large battery in. Well, they managed to do exactly that. Here, it’s a 5000mAh battery (just like every other phone) but this is impressive because a battery of this capacity is often very large. It also comes with 66W fast charging but the lack of a wireless charging coil may be a deal-breaker to some, especially because the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 has it.

There is a triple camera setup at the back, starring the 50MP f/1.9 main lens, another 50MP f/2.0 Ultrawide, and a 20MP f/2.4 telephoto. Both the Primary and telephoto feature OIS. It also features two 16MP selfie cameras for each of its display.

As mentioned, Honor refused to say the price of the tablet in Europe, and it may not sell in North America, either. Because of that, the folding phone may never have a chance to have a footing here in the Philippines. At least we can enjoy the Magic5 Pro. Not a folding phone, but still a highly impressive flagship.
