Google I/O: The Google Pixel Fold is available now and it’s ridiculously expensive.

Almost the same price as the Mate X3 if directly converted.

Google unveiled a lot of devices during its I/O event last May 10. We already tackled the Pixel 7A and how great it is based on price and specs and looks like Google is listening to feedback. Now, we’re taking a look at the company’s first-ever foldable phone, the Pixel Fold.

The Pixel Fold retained similar design concepts as the main Pixel line of smartphones including the visor-like camera and curved shape. The Pixel fold has a 7.6″ OLED with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 6:5 aspect ratio. Fold it and you will be met with a 5.8″ Pixel phone. By the way, the screen is very bright topping at 1450nits of brightness.

The hinge here, according to Google features fluid friction which allows for full 180-degree angles and supports “different postures”. In other words, this hinge has been tested multiple times to fold and lie flat on a surface. No need for the technicalities.

The tablet is powered by a Google Tensor G2 chipset with Google highlighting its AI capabilities and tough security. The foldable comes with 12GB RAM and a choice between 256GB or 512GB UFS 3.1 storage.

There is a triple camera setup at the back comprising of a 48MP sensor that’s identical to the Pixel 7A, and also with OIS, and two 10.8MP cameras. One for the ultrawide and one for the telephoto. The latter has 5x optical zoom and OIS. Google’s computational photography should be able to take advantage of these cameras in greater detail. Super Res Zoom is also supported up to 20x digitally.

The front features a 9.5MP fixed-focus selfie camera on the outside and an 8MP selfie camera on the inside.

The battery is 4821mAh with USB-PD support. The tablet supports Google’s 30W charger which is the maximum capacity that the tablet’s USB-C port can hold. By the way, this is sold separately. Your essentials. Now in DLCs!

The phone features a USB-C port, an in-display fingerprint scanner, a dual SIM Slot (one physical + one E-SIM), stereo speakers, and 5G.

It is quite expensive because Google thinks it can sell the Fold for USD 1,799 (~PHP 100.4K) and people will buy it like how they do with many Samsung foldable phones. The Pixels have limited availability which hinders their growth. None of them are available in the Philippines and we’re still hoping one day.

Colours include Porcelain and Obsidian. It will be available next month for pre-orders and those who do will also receive a FREE Pixel Watch. It is available in certain European countries like Germany and the UK, as well as Asian countries like Japan. Other release information would be revealed soon.

However, if you live in the US, you can pre-order starting today.
