Tecno Phantom X2 and X2 Pro SPOTTED IN SHOPEE!

Retractable lenses, and A VERY AFFORDABLE flagship at that! There are some massive budget cuts as well but don’t mind that.

Tecno is not a name you would often hear when talking about flagships. Little did you know that the company also makes flagships from time to time, along with sister company Infinix. However, unlike most flagships, Tecno managed to price theirs like a midranger while packing a punch at the same time.

TECNO Phantom X2

This here is the Phantom X2. The first Phantom X was a concept phone. The main feature of these phones are their retractable cameras. Not a new feature (Oppo’s R17 Pro had it way earlier, and some camera phones like the Samsung Galaxy K4 Zoom had a retractable lens as well) but it’s nice to see it a recurring thing in flagships.

The two phones have subtle differences. To differentiate them, you look at their camera specs. The Phantom X2 for instance, uses a 64MP primary camera with OIS (f/1.7, PDAF, OIS) alongside a 13MP ultrawide and a 2MP depth sensor. This is the type of budget cuts we’re having here, folks. Now, we wonder if some of you will still complain about OnePlus cutting off features in their flagship device after hearing this. The phone’s camera bump occupies 60% of the device. And we thought we’re only seeing it in memes.

The lens has a special type of glass film to enhance filtering and also better protect the lens. Oddly enough, only the X2 5G has OIS between the two. The front camera has 32MP resolution. Only the rear cameras can perform 4K@60fps video

The phone helms a 6.8″ FullHD+ (2400x1080px) 120Hz curved AMOLED screen protected with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. Inside of this is a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 chipset. A big step forward to the ageing MediaTek Helio G95 the first concept phone launched with. This is paired with 8GB RAM (+5GB Virtual) and 256GB internal storage. So far, this is the only series Tecno has that omits the headphone jack and MicroSD card slot.

It comes with a 5160mAh battery with 45W fast charging. Don’t expect wireless and reverse charging here. It’s not present. It is baked with HiOS 12 inside based on Android 13. The phone is affordable for a flagship, only Php 32,999 and comes in Stardust Grey and Moonlight Silver. As mentioned in the title, the phone has recently been listed in Tecno’s Shopee. Go get it from there. It may probably remain online-only to keep costs down.

Tecno Phantom X2 Pro

The main highlight of the series is of course the Pro version. Ironically, while these have better sensors overall, none of them have OIS so good luck getting stable video. We do believe that this phone has at least EIS to keep videos stable both the rear and the back.

It comes with the same type of display as the standard X2 and also comes with the same Dimensity 9000 chip. However, this time, this has 12GB RAM (alongside an extra 5GB virtual RAM of course) and 256GB internal storage. The battery and charging time of this is also identical. 5160mAh and 45W fast charging.

Let’s move to the main differentiator: the cameras! The X2 Pro is equipped with three working cameras at the back and a single 32MP at the front. These three cameras include the 50MP Primary (f/1.9, 1.2µm, PDAF), a 50MP retractable telephoto, the main highlight of the series (f/1.5, 65mm, 1/2.7″, 0.64µm, PDAF, 2.5x optical zoom), and a 13MP ultrawide camera (f/2.2, 1/1.3″, 1.12µm).

Going back to that telephoto camera, according to Tecno, the retractable feature alongside the 65mm focal point allows for more natural and realistic bokehs that could accurately simulate DSLR cameras. 65mm is a focal point rarely seen in any smartphone of any kind so we would like to know how that plays out. The f/1.49 aperture the largest out of any telephoto lens and allows for more light and better blur. However, too large an aperture may cause overexposure of an image. Like the rest of the lenses, the telephoto camera has no OIS sadly. So much for pro.

The phone is also pretty affordable when compared to other flagships. Its main colour is Mars Orange and will stand out from the rest of the smartphones currently available. This back is made of vegan leather. Meanwhile, Stardust Grey is made of aluminium and is of a matte texture. It is priced at Php 42,999 on Shopee.
