ICYMI: The Huawei Nova Y90 is a Mate 40-shaped budget phone

Premium design, budget specs. It’s all in the looks.

Huawei has released a new budget phone with a camera cutout that heavily reminds us of the budget Mate 40 series as if Huawei is recycling designs and then changing the internals. One major difference is that this phone has a headphone jack.

The design, while premium-looking, is also somewhat deceptive. One might think you’re getting a powerful phone based on its metallic-like finish. In reality, you’re getting nothing more than a competitor to the Redmi Note 11. The screen is a tall 6.7in. FHD+ (2388x1080px) IPS LCD with 90Hz refresh rate and 270Hz touch sampling rate. Under the hood is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 chipset paired with 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. The display is where the 8MP front camera resides.

Speaking of cameras, the rear camera design is mainly there for aesthetic reasons. Unlike the Mate 40, a flagship phone, you’re not getting top-notch cameras with OIS, a telephoto, or a high-res ultrawide. The phone instead has the typical 50MP+2MP+2MP setup seen on many budget phones.

It has a 5000mAh battery with 40W fast charging. The phone boots up with EMUI 12 without Google Services. Instead of Google Play, you can visit Huawei’s AppGallery to download your favourite apps, including American ones like Facebook and Whatsapp. Although apps from Google like YouTube and Classroom can only be accessed via a browser. You can wait for Honor to release its own line of smartphones if you wanted a Huawei-like phone with Google services.

The phone’s connectivity includes 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 5.0. The phone is charged via USB-C and also features a side-mounted fingerprint reader.

The phone is in its last pre-order stage. It started from August 12 and will end today, August 18th. Those who will pre-order will be entitled to receive a FREE Huawei Band worth Php 1,399. That’s quite a bit of saving especially if you ever plan to exercise and be fit.

It has three colours: Crystal Blue, Emerald Green, and Midnight Black. Price starts at Php 11,999.
