Xiaomi 12S and 12S Pro bring Leica lenses for global users!

They aren’t certainly ultra, but at least it’s Leica.

Some of you may be disappointed to hear that the Xiaomi 12S Ultra is China-only. Fret not, we global users can also experience Leica lenses on Xiaomi which also includes the included filters and the authentic and vibrant look. Enter the Xiaomi 12S and 12S Pro!

Xiaomi 12S

The Xiaomi 12S features a 6.28in. FHD+ (2400x1080px) AMOLED with 120Hz refresh rate and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection on the display. Unlike the 12S Pro and Ultra, this one is not LTPO, so you’re going to miss out on notable screen enhancements such as Dolby Vision TrueColor.

Both the Xiaomi 12S and 12S Pro use the TSMC-manufactured Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. It still is a 4nm chipset but instead of a Samsung foundry, this one is made by TSMC instead as mentioned. This is paired with 8 or 12GB RAM and either 128, 256, or 512GB UFS 3.1 internal storage.

The cameras are the main focus (no pun intended) for both of these phones. For starters, both use a 50MP Sony IMX707 primary camera which was also seen on the regular Xiaomi 12 series. This camera is complemented by a 13mp ultrawide and a 5mp telemacro. Disappointing for a flagship we know. The front camera has 32mp resolution. These cameras use Leica sensors and use Leica filters as well as the Leica Authentic and Vibrant Look, the latter which combines Xiaomi’s computational photography abilities.

The phone has a 4500mAh battery inside. It is charged via USB-C and has 67W fast charging, 50W fast wireless charging, and 10W reverse charging. It is identical to the Ultra variant.

It has an in-display fingerprint sensor, Harman-Kardon stereo speakers (although it lacks a 3.5mm jack), NFC, and an IR Blaster to control appliances. It has 5G, Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6, and Dual-band Wi-Fi connectivity. It boots up with MIUI 13 based on Android 12.

The colours of the Xiaomi 12S are identical to the 12: Green, Pink, Black, and White. It is now available in China starting at CNY 3,999 (~Php 33K) for the 8/128 configuration and goes all the way to CNY 5,199 (~Php 43K) for the 12/512 one.

Xiaomi 12S Pro

The Xiaomi 12s Pro is almost of the same deal, it even comes with the same exact design. However, there are notable differences from the vanilla 12S. This is what we get as the flagship for the global variant.

The screen here is a 6.73in. WQHD+ (3200x1440px) Samsung E5 AMOLED with 120Hz variable refresh rate and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection. The same exact panel as the 12S Ultra.

Like the Xiaomi 12S, this phone also upgrades to the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset paired with 8 or 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and either 128, 256, or 512GB RAM.

The cameras are also wholly different and it stands out against the Xiaomi 12S. The most noticeable distinction is that the 12S Pro uses a triple 50MP camera setup. The first one is the primary Sony IMX707 camera, the second one is a telephoto camera (not periscope) with 2x optical zoom and OIS. And finally, we get an ultrawide camera. The front camera is unchanged and still uses a 32MP sensor.

The battery and charging capabilities here are also entirely different. This phone sports an insignificantly larger 4600mAh battery but this is offset with 120W fast charging. It also includes the Surge P1 charging chip like in the Ultra. The 50W fast wireless and 10W reverse charging are left intact.

In terms of connectivity, it’s the same as every flagship. Namely, 5G services, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, and Wi-Fi 6. It also has an IR Blaster to control appliances. It boots with MIUI 13 based on Android 12.

Like every flagship released now, the Xiaomi 12S Pro has Harman-Kardon speakers and lacks a headphone jack. It also has an in-display fingerprint reader.

In China, the Xiaomi 12S Pro starts at CNY 4,699 (~Php 38.9K) for the 8/128 configuration. The most powerful variant starts at CNY 5,899 (~Php 48.7K)
