The Huawei P50 Pocket is now official! It’s a rival to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip series

Huawei might have lost Google but their R&D spirit still stands!

Huawei isn’t new to the foldable phone business. In fact, they were one of the pioneers of this new tech. They have previously released the Mate X that unfolds like a tablet similar to the Galaxy Fold. Now, the company has announced its clamshell counterpart and rival to the Z Fold series, the P50 Pocket. So-called because it can easily fit in one’s pocket thanks to its foldable structure.

Interestingly, the P50 Pocket can fold without or barely visible creases. Samsung took three generations of Z Folds but there are still creases that are highly visible to the naked eye. This phone uses a custom-built 3D structural glass design.

Huawei P50 Pocket comes with gapless folding screen and Snapdragon 888 4G chipset

The display, when unfolded, reveals a 6.9in. OLED panel with 120Hz refresh rate and a resolution of 2790x1118px. The phone houses the punch-hole selfie camera and has a 21:9 tall aspect ratio.

The phone features a 1in. OLED cover screen and this has functionalities similar to a smartwatch. In addition, this cover screen allows you to download and install third-party and first-party applications. You can navigate through this cover screen which has a size similar to the back camera array.

The phone has three cameras: a 40mp main sensor coupled with a 13mp ultrawide, and a 32mp ultra-spectrum camera that is quite useful for colour rendering. In front is a 10.7mp punch-hole camera that is interestingly, an ultrawide sensor.

Unlike other flagships with 5G capabilities, the Huawei P50 Pocket only uses the 4G variant of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888. It’s still unsure whether Huawei can use the newest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 flagship chip. This SD888 4G chip is paired with 8 or 12GB RAM and either 256 or 512GB worth of storage. The phone uses Huawei’s proprietary HarmonyOS at least in China.

It has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, has no headphone jack, and supports Bluetooth 5.2 as well as expandable memory through the company’s own nano memory technology

The phone comes in two standard colours and a special colour, which are Black, White, and Gold respectively. The P50 Pocket standard colours only come with 8/256 and is priced at CNY 8,988 (~Php 70.6K) while the special edition Gold comes with a 12/512 configuration and is priced at CNY 10,988 (~Php 86.3K). The phone was on sale in China starting yesterday but has not yet been announced for release in international waters, so we can all hope and wait and see how it competes with the Galaxy Z Fold series.
