Coolpad makes a cool comeback with a 5G phone!

Oh yeah, they disappeared. No wonder we weren’t seeing them for a while.

Coolpad is a Chinese smartphone manufacturer that made huge appearances at the early age of smartphones. They were known for carrying devices that were high in specs but low in cost. The company also collaborated with another ill-fated brand called LeEco. Both of these companies died out in recent years due to stiff competition from brands like Samsung, Xiaomi, and Realme. The two had a good footing and offered top-tier phones at a low price while they were in India.

The company has announced a return, and a return it shall be. It’s offering a 5G phone with a Mediatek Dimensity 900 chip inside, paired with 6 or 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. This phone is called the Coolpad Cool 20 Pro and was released in China four days ago. For a company making a return with a 5G chipset, it has a huge potential as brands like Tecno and Infinix, both from Transsion, don’t even have a 5G device yet and they are a bigger company than Coolpad.

Coolpad Cool 20 Pro is official with Dimensity 900, 120 Hz display

The Mediatek Dimnesity 900 is a 5G chipset manufactured on a 6nm process. It uses the Cortex A-78 performance cores clocked at 2.4GHz and Cortex A-55 power efficiency cores clocked at 2GHz. It also uses the ARM Mali-G68 MC4 for graphics and supports both UFS 2.1 and UFS 3.1 storage for fast write and read speeds.

In terms of cameras, there is a triple camera setup consisting of a 50mp main sensor, an 8mp ultrawide, and unfortunately, a 2mp macro. It also has an 8mp camera for selfies, which is an odd choice for a phone of this tier. The company is using Arcsoft for its image algorithms. The rear is also built on premium AG Glass that does not get smeared with fingerprints.

In terms of display, the phone uses a 6.58in. FHD+ IPS LCD with 120Hz refresh rate. Unfortunately, the phone has an outdated waterdrop notch instead of the newer punch hole. Its design also weirdly reminds us of the iPhone 12 series or the Motorola Moto Edge 20 Fusion.

In terms of battery, the phone has a typically large 4500mAh battery paired with 33W fast charging that is charged through a USB-C port. It also has a headphone jack and supports Dirac stereo sound with a second dedicated speaker on top of the device.

It uses a side-mounted fingerprint sensor for biometrics. It has support for dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.1, and is expandable via MicroSD Card
