Just a few weeks ago, Carl Pei announced that OnePlus would merge with Oppo in order to gain more R&D resources. The company will still operate independently, but also under the umbrella of Oppo. When they were established, they were part of Oppo until they weren’t. Now the company is going back, it’s like a full circle.
One of the most persistent questions of this merging is the fate of OxygenOS, whether OnePlus will be continue on using it or not. OnePlus said consistently that they will continue using OxygenOS and will not move to ColorOS.
However, the company announced that OxygenOS would merge with ColorOS. Fret not, the experience would likely turn out the same as the old OxygenOS, as only the codebase of OxygenOS that would merge with ColorOS. In fact, the newest version of ColorOS, ColorOS 12 would likely offer Oppo users nearly the same experience to that of OxygenOS. OnePlus said that the move would offer them a more capable R&D and resources.
OnePlus said that its global smartphones will still run OxygenOS and assured that this new build will come with better stability and strength of the platform. Upcoming models will run the new OxygenOS while existing models may get an OTA update alongside Android 12, as OnePlus is one of the companies granted for Android 12 beta.
In addition to this, OnePlus announced models starting with OnePlus 8 and its T and R variants would get four years worth of Android security updates and three years worth of major updates, which means the OnePlus 8 would get not only Android 12 but also Android 13 (if that’s what it is called), while the OnePlus 9 and newer flagship handsets would get Android 14.
The company also announced that its midrange line, the Nord series, would get two years worth of major updates and three for security updates. The N series, which is OnePlus’ budget series, will only get one major update but will retain the three years of security updates. At least those two will still get a major update, unlike most budget phones.
