BOE has unveiled its rollable display, a novel concept that was first teased by LG, and was supposed to come by if their mobile business wasn’t shut down. They unveiled this concept during the International Display Technology Conference (IDTC 2021) in Beijing, during which they also announced a new generation of glass-based displays that would soon enter mass production.
During the exhibition, BOE showed their AMOLED rolling display concepts, and just like LG’s supposed plan, would roll to the right, extending the screen to become that of a tablet, also unlike foldables, this one would have no creases.
BOE claims that the display would roll at a frequency of 200,000 times and that its curvature radius is only 4mm. Other new concepts BOE has shown includes a micro-LED panel with a peak brightness of 10,000 nits which is very very bright. This display was demonstrated on a small vehicle heads-up display. They also unveiled a monitor with 480Hz refresh rate and a 1ms ultra fast response time.
It’s not the first time we’ve seen a rollable concept. For instance, TCL is reported to be working on their own design for the rollable concept that can also fold. LG had also plans for it, but was substantially cancelled due to their mobile business shutting down. Oppo is working on a concept called “Oppo X 2021”; that phone would resemble the phone BOE has shown in the exhibit. This is no coincidence as BOE will supply the foldable display for Oppo.
