Smartsens Unveils its Newest 1-inch 50MP Sensor for Flagship Phones

A new challenger approaches!

It is speculated that the new 50MP sensor will be first used on the Pura 90 Series. Seen here is the Huawei Pura 80

A Chinese company named Smartsens has unveiled a new 1-inch 50MP sensor intended for flagship devices. The company may not be familiar to many, but it has manufactured CMOS sensors before, and this is also not the brand’s first parade to flagship sensors. It is said that Huawei is the first customer to utilize the sensor, on their upcoming Pura 90 series.

As per the tipster TechInfoSocials, the new sensor named SC5A6XS, is built on a 22nm process and features a crispy clear 1.6µm pixel size so that even night shots look bright and vibrant without succumbing to excess grain. The sensor is also capable of shooting videos of up to 4K@60fps (with HDR enabled) and 4K@120fps without HDR. In addition, it uses the brand’s newest LoFiC HDR 3.0 tech. This tech allows the sensor to capture multiple images at once at varying brightness levels, peaking at 115dB dynamic range. In consumer terms, this means images will be more life-like and night shots remain bright and bursting with energy. For photographers, the sensor is designed so that dynamic range is kept balanced without causing too much exposure or too much contrast.

Compared to Smartsens’ previous flagship sensor, the SC580XS, the 5A6XS is said to consume 11% less energy so phones having it can process images faster while also preventing the sensor from heating, which could damage it.

A hybrid system combining full-pixel AllPix ADAF and PDAF (phase detection autofocus) allows the sensor to focus accurately and at lightning-fast speeds across different lighting conditions.

While the Huawei Pura 90 may be the first series of flagship phones to possess it, other flagship phones may also use it should its performance be promising as its specs suggest.
