This is going to be devastating to both companies
A report from Bloomberg said that Arm, licensee of Qualcomm’s chipset architecture, is deciding to cut ties with the company. This is devastating to both brands as Qualcomm is one of Arm’s largest customers and Qualcomm’s future plans is severely affected. This includes its chipsets for smartphones, laptops, and vehicles.
This sudden termination stemmed way back in 2022, wherein Arm accused Qualcomm of creating custom Phoenix’ chipsets without their prior permission. Arm then sued Qualcomm for patent infringement and breach of contract.
While Qualcomm has slowly moved away from Arm due to the lawsuit, many of its new CPUs, such as Oryon, still heavily rely on Arm’s instruction set for it to communicate between the device hardware and software. The Oryon CPUs do not use Arm’s cores.
This is still a developing story, and Arm has given Qualcomm 60 days to respond. If the contract does get terminated, then Qualcomm’s future will look bleak.
