Waiting for Dimensity 1440
MediaTek has recently announced a new addition to its fast-growing line of Dimensity midrange 5G chipsets, the next one is called the Dimensity 1080. As the name entails, it does have support for 1080p video.
Kidding aside, the main feature of the chipset is its increased efficiency over the Dimensity 920. It also brings some camera updates to the lineup.
Due to the growing number of phones with a 200MP camera, the chipset can now natively support that resolution. So far, three phones have been announced that employ Samsung’s 200MP ISOCELL HP6 camera sensor. It also natively supports hardware-accelerated 4K HDR videos.
In terms of performance, this new chipset comes with slightly faster clocks versus the Dimensity 920. It is still processed by a 6nm TSMC process but the clock speed of its Cortex-A78 performance cores is now up from 2.5GHz to 2.6GHz. It uses the same GPU as the Dimensity 920, the Mali-G68. There may not be significant benchmark improvements here and the chipset is, in a sense, a response to the growing demand of 200MP cameras for smartphones.
The chipset shall be available to smartphones by the fourth quarter by 2022.
