While LG may have backed out of the smartphone market, that doesn’t mean they would stop making products that will wow a lot of users, and the LG UltraGear 17G90Q presents that. It’s LG’s first gaming laptop and oh boy, it packs quite a lot for a first-timer.

LG manufactures multiple high-tech lifestyle electronics such as soundbars, TVs, washing machines, air conditioners, and even laptops. While they have made laptops before, it’s usually mainstream ones and less about gaming.

LG’s UltraGear series is geared towards gamers just like ASUS’ Republic of Gamers. The new UltraGear 17G90Q features a large 17in (for a laptop) screen hence the “17” in the name. This screen has a resolution of 1920x1080px and also features 300Hz refresh rate that you can take advantage of when playing fast-paced games such as Battle Royales and racing games.

On the processor side comes the Intel Tiger Lake H processor, which is Intel’s newest 10nm processor in the Core lineup. Alongside this processor is the NVIDIA RTX 3080 GPU Max-Q graphics processing unit (GPU) that users can make good use of along with the high refresh rate.

LG also has advertised the laptop as large but lightweight. The laptop weighs 2.7kg and is only 21.4mm thick. This weight includes the large 93Wh battery inside that ensures longevity without ever charging it frequently.

LG has also included the UltraGear Studio to optimize your use of the laptop. It also comes with a True RGB-lit keyboard that’s not unfortunately mechanical that you can adjust, mix, and match using the UltraGear Studio program. In terms of sound, there’s a built-in 2-way speaker system with support for DTS:X Ultra allowing for rich, clear bass and truly an immersive sound that could be satisfying to hear whenever you’re in-game.

As a gaming laptop, you don’t want to be let down by enormous amounts of heat so LG has put a Vapour Chamber liquid cooling system so that when you game for longer periods, the laptop doesn’t die from exhaustion and ultimately reduces performance.

In terms of storage, the laptop comes with a built-in 1TB SSD (though there may be other variants) and supports M.2 SSD for expansion. There’s also a dual-channel 16 or 32GB DDR4 RAM that comes along with the laptop. Honestly though, 16GB is just considered minimal these days especially if you’re heavy into gaming or play performance-inducing games like Call of Duty Warzone and Microsoft’s Flight Simulator.

LG made sure their first gaming laptop comes across as literally “gaming”. From the hardware, to the materials, to the design and even software. They know who their market is anyway, unlike their mobile division that seems to have had lost its way.
