Yesterday, AMD and Mediatek announced that they will be collaborating to work on a high-performance Wi-Fi module for desktop PCs and laptops. This Wi-Fi modem is called the AMD RZ600 that promises improved internet connectivity.
This Wi-Fi module uses Mediatek’s Filogic 330P chipset that will power up next year’s laptops and desktops. This should deliver fast Wi-Fi speeds with low latencies and less interference from other signals.
To make this seamless connectivity possible, AMD and Mediatek have developed certified PCIe and USB interfaces that focus on modern sleep states as well as better power management. These two are important for customer experiences as most would use their desktops and laptops for a very long time. Furthermore, optimization factors like torture testing and compatibility testing ensured durability and lessened the time for OEMs in manufacturing their laptops.
There are two modems released under the RZ600 series. These include the RZ616 Wi-Fi 6E module and the RZ608 Wi-Fi 6E module. Both of these have minimal differences.
The RZ616 features support to 160MHz Wi-Fi channels while the RZ608 supports only 80MHz. Another difference is that the former can be slotted to both M.2 2230 and 1216 ports while the RZ608 can only be slotted to the M.2 2230 port. The RZ616 is also much faster, supporting up to 2.4Gbps connectivity speeds while the RZ608 can only support 1.2Gbps connectivity.
“MediaTek is already the Wi-Fi leader in a number of different segments, including smart TVs, routers, and voice assistants. The new Filogic 330P chipset further broadens our connectivity portfolio as we continue to expand our footprint in the PC market,” Alan Hsu, Corporate Vice President, and General Manager, Intelligent Connectivity at MediaTek. “With this high throughput and ultra-low power chipset powering the next generation of AMD laptops, consumers can enjoy seamless connectivity and longer battery life while they game, stream, and video chat,” he added.
“Having fast and reliable wireless connectivity is crucial, especially as consumers’ speed, bandwidth and performance demands rise due to increased video calling, streaming and gaming,” said Saeid Moshkelani, senior vice president and general manager, client business unit, AMD. “We believe that combining powerful AMD Ryzen processors with MediaTek’s leadership advanced connectivity technologies will deliver an all-around incredible computing experience.”
The Filogic 330P is a desktop and laptop-based Wi-Fi chipset that supports the latest 2×2 Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E standards with speeds from the base 6GHz up to 7.12GHz. The chipset also supports Bluetooth 5.2 and integrates Mediatek’s Power Amplifier and Low-Noise Amplifier to ensure a low power consumption rate. The Filogic 330P supports up to 2.4Gbps connectivity, including support for the new 6GHz spectrum at 160Mhz bandwidth.
