This name change does not affect any of Facebook’s social media apps. The name is soo meta.
Over the past few weeks, there have been talks about Facebook changing its name in order to reflect its metaverse and technology ambitions. We finally got a confirmation that it did.
Facebook Inc’s new name is now “Meta”. As simple as that, to reflect its metaverse ambitions. This new name is similar to Google and Alphabet wherein the “Google” name was kept for all its services while the corporate name was changed to “Alphabet Inc”. In the case of Meta Inc, the “Facebook” name as a social media site would be kept intact, but all of its social media apps and websites (Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp) as well as Oculus are now under Meta Inc’s umbrella.
According to Facebook, the new metaverse refers to ” a hybrid of today’s online social experiences, sometimes expanded into three dimensions or projected into the physical world.” In the simplest sense, the metaverse refers to VR and AR technologies, and Facebook’s ambitions and goals for them in terms of development.
So how does this affect you as a regular user? Aside from a few name changes, it’s nothing much. You can still use Meta’s Oculus VR headsets as well as its social media apps. Outside of marketing, it’s just a new corporate name, and, as we said, just like Google and Alphabet.
To reflect its new metaverse ambitions, Facebook/Meta is developing new tools to explore this metaverse platform, which include “Presence Platform” that will enable new mixed-reality experiences on its newer Oculus VR headgear, such as the Quest 2. In addition, the company has invested $150 million in immersive learning for its next-generation content creators
