Mediatek announced that they have created a new initiative called the Open Resource Initiative that lets manufacturers modify existing Mediatek chipsets. The first to receive this treatment being the Mediatek Dimensity 1200 5G.
This initiative lets manufacturers modify features such as AI, camera, display, graphics, sensors and connectivity and APUs (AI Processing Unit).
“MediaTek is collaborating with the world’s largest smartphone brands to unlock customized consumer experiences that differentiate flagship 5G smartphones,” said Dr. Yenchi Lee, Deputy General Manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Communications Business Unit. “Whether it’s novel multimedia features, unmatched performance, brilliant imaging or more synergy between smartphones and services, with our architecture device makers can tailor their devices to complement a variety of consumer lifestyles.”
Mediatek said that this initiative would give manufacturers the freedom to cater to a certain demographic and lifestyle, be it for power users, camera users or those looking for a great AI. With this initiative, manufacturers can bring the Dimensity 1200 to its limits, thus we can see that high end midrangers could potentially outclass flagships to a certain degree.
Mediatek said that devices with a custom built Mediatek Dimensity 1200 should come this July. One of the very first examples is the OnePlus Nord 2 with the Dimensity 1200 AI chipset.
