We’re also surprised by how much the Phantom V Fold costs. Kudos to Tecno for bringing foldable phones closer to the masses.
During a live launch event, Tecno showcased its newest flagship and the epitome of Tecno’s capabilities as a company. They can actually create flagship phones but their main focus is the masses who could normally purchase a midrange phone, less of flagships.
In spite of that, the new Phantom V Fold is actually pretty damn affordable in comparison to the Huawei Mate X3 and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 which are nearly double the price! The Tecno Phantom V Fold starts at only PHP 59,999 which is the price of a standard flagship! It will be available starting June 20th. The device was first unveiled during MWC 2023, alongside other companies, including Honor, Huawei, and Unihertz.
The unfolded OLED screen measures 7.85″, revealing a tablet-like architecture. When folded like a regular phone, the screen size is 6.42″. The display is made of a flagship LTPO3 OLED material and has a 2K (2296x2000px) resolution for the unfolded type and FullHD+ (2550x1080px) for the folded screen. According to Tecno, the hinge is made of aerospace-grade aluminium which prevents visible creases and can withstand up to 200,000 folds. This screen has a 120Hz refresh rate.
The phone is meant to be out of this world which is hinted at in its “Cosmic Design” as well. The phone is made of leather and has a unique line pattern which you can see when you look at the phone closer.
There are a total of five cameras on the Tecno Phantom V Fold. Starting with the rear, the cameras here are all packed and fully functional. Not surprising since this is a flagship. The camera bump is home to the 50MP Primary (f/1.85, 1/1.3″, OIS), the 50MP Telephoto, and 13MP Ultrawide. The front cameras include the 16MP main camera and the 32MP secondary screen camera.
Tecno and the rest of Transsion are particularly known for using almost exclusively MediaTek chipsets as if they have a contract with them. The same goes here. The Phantom V Fold uses a MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ chipset with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage.
The phone uses a standard 5000mAh battery with 45W fast charging. That’s still a lot more compared to the Galaxy ZFold 4 and can charge faster than it, too. Tecno claims the device can be charged from a flat battery to full in 55 minutes, less than an hour!
Of course, it has 5G services, 4G LTE, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, Bluetooth 5.3, and NFC. There’s also a Dual Nano-SIM Card inside and Stereo Speakers though not tuned by JBL, unlike the midrange Infinix Note 30 5G. Colours include Black and White. What was not mentioned, surprisingly, is the IP rating. This was not part of it likely to keep costs down.
To reiterate, the phone is the country’s most affordable foldable phone to launch. Priced at PHP 59,999 with 12GB RAM and 512GB ROM. It will be available for purchase on June 20th.
