Under the Motorola brand of course! Just like the Thinkpads, the Thinkphone is a rugged phone for business users.
Leakers have been discussing the possibility that Lenovo is working on a Think-branded smartphone intended for business and branded to Motorola. It seems that those rumors are true. Although not 100% accurate, since the device exists, we can say it’s mostly accurate.
In CES 2023, Lenovo announced a flagship phone for businesses called the ThinkPhone. This new phone mimics the design of the popular ThinkPad X1 Carbon. Officially, the phone is called Lenovo ThinkPhone by Motorola. Really can’t put ourselves off-brand huh.
The display here is a 6.6in. FullHD+ (2400x1080px) OLED screen with 120Hz refresh rate. It uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset with a choice between 8 or 12GB RAM and storage options between 128 and 512GB.
The main highlight of this is how the ThinkPhone is designed to be specifically a more mobile version of the ThinkPad. There are multiple colours available, just like the ThinkPad. There’s Carbon Black…
There is a red key at the side of the phone, mimicking that of the red navigation pointer that is a staple of the ThinkPad since inception. This is a programmable key and can even open the Walkie Talkie app through Microsoft Teams!
The rear Carbon Black back is built on a material called Aramid Fiber. Supposedly, it’s more durable than steel. The frame is made of aircraft-grade aluminium while the front is protected via Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. Strength and durability are a tradition to ThinkPads and these concepts are applied here. Because of that, it has IP68 water and dust resistance and MIL-STD-810H certified.
There are three cameras at the back and a single 32MP camera at the front with autofocus. The rear camera is comprised of a 50MP primary with PDAF and OIS as well as a 13MP f/2.2 ultrawide that also functions as a macro vision camera. The third camera is unspecified.
It has a 5000mAh battery with 68W fast charging (brick and cable are supplied) along with 15W of fast wireless charging.
The “Thinkphone” name isn’t just for branding alone. Lenovo has also brought native integration with several ThinkPad and ThinkCentre models. These integration features include ‘Think 2 Think’ connectivity, which is modified from Motorola’s ‘Ready For’ connectivity. This program allows you to seamlessly move or copy texts, photos, documents, as well as drag-and-drop files from your phone to a ThinkPad laptop wirelessly. It also allows you to turn your phone into a webcam and open any Android app on a Windows laptop, provided that they support said app.
Lenovo collaborated with Microsoft to bring you Teams, Outlook, and Microsoft 365 ready and pre-installed on the Thinkphone just like how these apps are natively available on the Thinkpad.
Finally, the Thinkphone comes with Motorola’s built-in encryption service called Moto KeySafe. This app protects passwords, PINs, cryptowallet keys, and other sensitive data, in an encrypted, heavily protected, tamper-resistant environment.
For ITs and professionals, Motorola has also included a debug tool called Moto OEMConfig that will allow admins to configure the phone remotely to business clients.
The phone has a limited release. It will arrive in North America, Europe, Latin America, and selected countries in Asia. It will also arrive in Australia and the Middle East. We’re not expecting Lenovo Philippines to release the phone here due to market choices. It’s also a business device so it might not even appear on local electronics outlets, nor Lenovo’s own concept stores.
