After a week of delay, Motorola finally launched the Moto X30 Pro, S30 Pro, and Razr (2022)

The first with 200MP camera, as if that’s an achievement. The Razr saw a noticeable improvement!

Motorola X30

The launch event for Motorola’s new phones were supposed to launch last August 2 but was pushed back to August 11 for unknown reasons. Whatever the reason may be, the bright side here is that these phones have finally launched and, as expected, they garnered significant attention, especially the Motorola Razr, where the phone is now a full-fledged flagship instead of a midrange offering. One of them offers a 200MP camera. Its practicality in real-life usage is questionable.

The Motorola X30 is the world’s first phone with a 200MP rear camera. Rumors referred to it as the “Frontier” and this could possibly be its name if it ever gets out of China. It packs Samsung’s ISOCELL HP1, and the company is known for making ridiculously large MP cameras with mediocre performance, so we’re hoping the HP1 is different.

The camera has f/1.95 aperture and the sensor measures 1/1.22″. It uses a 16-in-1 pixel binning algorithm and also features OIS. This new camera sensor can take a 16-to-1 12.5MP image, a 50MP image with large 1.28µm individual pixels, and even 200MP natively, although taking 200MP images natively is definitely overkill for social media use as it will be compressed, and the size of the image as well as resolution, are enormously large, so it would take a bit of your storage especially if you’re the type of person to take images on the daily.

The camera also has the capability to take 8K videos. There are other cameras at the back, which include the 50MP ultrawide and a 12MP Sony IMX663 telephoto with OIS and 2x optical zoom. The front camera is a 60MP Omnivision OV60a sensor, which is unusual for a selfie camera and this has ridiculously large resolution.

The display is typical for a flagship, it features a 6.67in. 10-bit FHD+ (2400x1080px) IPS LCD with 144Hz refresh rate, a conventional feature for most Motorola flagships. This panel has support for HDR10+ and DCI-P3 colour gamut for accurate colour reproduction. The fingerprint scanner is also located embedded inside the display.

Like every recently released flagship, the phone is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset paired with 8 or 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and either 128 or 256GB UFS 3.1 internal storage.

The phone’s battery has 4,610mAh capacity and supports up to 125W fast charging and Motorola claims it can charge a flat battery to full in just 19 minutes! That’s super fast and quite useful especially if your forgot to charge your phone overnight. If ever you have a wireless charging plate, you’re in luck as it supports 50W fast wireless charging. You can purchase an optional 125W charger that can also charge most laptops.

It comes pre-installed with MyUI 4.0 on top based on Android 12. It comes in Black and White and starts at CNY 3,499 (~Php 28.9K) for the 8/128 configuration, CNY 3,999 (~Php 33K) for the 12/256 configuration, and CNY 4,299 (~Php 35.5K) for the highest trim, which is 12/512. It could make its way globally, though we’re hoping they keep the rumored “Frontier” name as it sounds aggressive, which is the perfect description for the X30 Pro.

It is now available in China.

Motorola S30 Pro

The Motorola S30 Pro is a slightly watered-down version of the X30 Pro. It features a premium design with that “Motorola” flair in terms of aesthetics. It features a smaller 6.55in. FHD+ (2400x1080px) OLED screen with the same 144Hz refresh rate.

There are still three cameras at the back plus the 32MP selfie camera located in the middle of the display. The main cameras include a 50MP Omnivision OV50A primary camera with OIS, a 13MP ultrawide module, and unfortunately, a 2MP depth sensor. Clearly this phone is used for other things than a photo shooter.

It uses last year’s Snapdragon 888+ chipset. Even then, this can quite compete with newer releases. Also, because this is the performance variant, it should age similarly to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, a new generation chipset. It is paired with 8 or 12GB RAM and either 128, 256 or 512GB internal storage.

It carries a 4,400mAh battery, slightly smaller than the X30 Pro but nonetheless, has no significant performance differences. It also has a slower 68W fast charging. Like the Edge X30 Pro, this has an embedded fingerprint scanner and also boots with MyUI 4.0 based on Android 12.

It comes in Black and Blue. The latter has a vegan leather finish. It is now available for sale in China. It starts at CNY 2,199 (~Php 18.2K) for the 8/128 trim, CNY 2,699 (~Php 22.3K) for the 12/256 trim, and CNY 2,899 (~Php 24K) for the top-of-the-line 12/512 trim.

We’re also hoping to see it launch internationally, especially here in the Philippines

Motorola Razr (2022)

After a mixed reception for the original reboot of the popular flip phone, Lenovo took the extra steps to further improve the phone, and after a long wait, it’s finally available! It kept the same clamshell design as the previous handset but now has a more reasonable pricing and flagship chip.

The dimensions of the phone was kept intact and the screen still measures 6.7in. and still feature a flexible OLED screen. That’s where the similarities end, as even the OLED used here is upgraded, it now flexes better thanks to a better hinge that the phone came with. It has HDR10+ support, DC Dimming, DCI-P3 colour gamut, HDR10+, and 144Hz refresh rate as well. Another noticeable improvement was the choice of using a dot notch instead of the stupidly ugly notch that was used last time. This dot notch houses the 32MP selfie camera.

It also comes with a smaller 2.7in. secondary OLED screen which means you can take selfies using the rear lenses.

Speaking of cameras, this phone comes with two, like the Z Flip 4. The primary camera is a 50MP sensor while the other is a 13MP 121-degree ultrawide camera.

As mentioned, one noticeable and significant change was the move from a Snapdragon 700 series chip to a flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip. Motorola saw the feedback and took it to heart, which is thoughtful.

It comes with a stereo speaker system with Dolby Atmos support. Like every other Motorola phones in China, it comes with MyUI 4.0 based on Android 12. This version is optimized for use for foldable phones.

The battery is small, comparable to the Z Flip 4’s battery. Inside it is a 3500mAh battery with fast charging, although Lenovo didn’t tell the rating.

It only has one colour, Black. The phone’s now available in China starting at CNY 5,999 (~Php 49.6K) for the 8/128 basic configuration, CNY 6,499 (~Php 53.7K) for the 8/256 configuration, and CNY 7,299 (~Php 60.3K) for the 12/512 configuration. Lenovo has not made an announcement yet for global availability but fingers crossed!
