Despite the company’s up and downs as well as threats from rival Mediatek, the company still rose to the top!
Counterpoint has released its fiscal report for smartphone chipset makers for the first quarter. The report shows that Qualcomm has won that quarter, with 44% of the total smartphone chipset shares. Coming in second is Apple thanks to their powerful M1 series chips. Counterpoint also noted that 5G chipsets grew 23% on a year-on-year growth, and baseband revenues grew 36% compared to the same period in 2021.
Counterpoint Research Director Dale Gai said “Qualcomm leads the smartphone AP/SoC and baseband revenues with 44% share. The revenue reached $6.3 billion for Qualcomm, growing 56% YoY in Q1 2022, driven by the higher premium mix which has led to growth in the ASPs. Qualcomm is also providing the discrete baseband shipments to Apple and Qualcomm’s own AP’s, which contribute to around a quarter of Qualcomm’s smartphone AP/SoC and baseband revenues.”
Gai also noted Mediatek’s steady growth over the recent years, especially in the budget and midrange 5G market as well as the 4G market for budget phones. The penetration of 5G has greatly contributed to the company’s growth. The flagship chips Dimensity 9000 and Dimensity 8000 also contributed well to its recognition worldwide.
Apple coming in second place with 26.4% is thanks to a large demand for the iPhone 13 series as well as the top-performing M1 chip found on iPads and Macs.
