Mediatek’s Filogic 380 and 880 brings Wi-Fi 7 technology for the first time

A breakthrough in connectivity development in which Mediatek is a leader.

A few days ago, Mediatek has released three new chipsets which aim to bring smoothly flowing connectivity to affordable handsets. Alongside the Mediatek Dimensity 1050, 930, and Helio G99 came the Filogic 380 and 880 modems. Both of which boast the world’s first Wi-Fi 7 connectivity available for enterprise, operator, retail, and consumers.

FILOGIC 880

The Filogic 880 is a complete Wi-Fi 7 solution offering a scalable pentaband 4×4 architecture. In theory, the combination of a Wi-Fi 7 Access Point with a powerful quad-core Cortex-A78 processor and an advanced NPU makes it possible to reach speeds of up to 36Gbps!

In one channel, the Filogic 880 can support speeds of up to 10Gbps and also has added support for OFDMA RU (Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access – Resource Units) which help Wi-Fi 6/6E connectivity connect to multiple access points simultaneously; as well as MU-MIMO (Multiple User-Multiple Input, Multiple Output) technology that allows Wi-Fi signals to connect to several devices simultaneously, and MBSSID (Multiple Basic Service Set IDentifier) that allows for users to share multiple virtual access points while running on the same hardware

Meanwhile, the Filogic 380 is more of a general use modem intended for consumers and brings Wi-Fi 7 connectivity to devices such as set-top boxes, smartphones, televisions, and over-the-top (OTT) streaming. The chip’s dual 2×2 capability is also optimized “out-of-the-box” for these devices as the company also supplies them with the corresponding platform solutions. This makes for a smoother and faster application processing.

“Our wireless connectivity solutions are designed to deliver the fastest performance using the most advanced technologies, and represent MediaTek’s commitment to drive Wi-Fi 7 adoption in a large number of new markets,” said Alan Hsu, corporate vice president and general manager of the Intelligent Connectivity business at MediaTek. “With Filogic 880 and Filogic 380, our customers can deliver fast, reliable and always-on connected experiences to meet the industry’s growing connectivity demands.”

The Cortex-A78 and NPU integrated with the Filogic 880 feature a built-in cryptographic engine as well as the rapid transfer of data through different interfaces (5Gbps for USB and 10Gbps for PCI-Express).

FILOGIC 380

The Filogic 380 is a 6nm stand-alone single-chip Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3 modem designed to bring the “best-in-class” connectivity. It is optimized for smartphones, TVs, notebooks, set-top boxes, OTT devices, and many more consumer electronic devices. It has support for basic and key Wi-Fi 7 technologies such as 4096-QAM, 320MHz, MRU, and MLO

Unlike previously released modems which only have dual-band Wi-Fi support, the Filogic 380 has support for tri-band Wi-Fi which includes 2.4, 5, and 6GHz connections. It also supports Bluetooth 5.3 with Bluetooth LE audio for seamless and smooth-flowing sound. In one channel, it can support speeds of up to 5Gbps and MLO speeds of up to 6.5Gbps.

Up until 27th May, Mediatek will be demonstrating its new Filogic Wi-Fi 7 solutions at Computex 2022.
