More telcos mean more choices for everyone. Competition is going to be fierce
According to the DICT, after the revised Public Service Act has been announced, several foreign telcos suddenly voiced their interest to set up shop in the Philippines. This is good news! As this will help improve the telecommunications infrastructure this country desperately needs, thus creating more competition and the top-ranking local services will continue to further improve their services.
DICT will speed up the process of any interested telco entering the country according to DICT Secretary Emmanuel Rey Caintic.
“Marami na nagpapahiwatig, marami na nagtatanong ano gagawin nila para mabilis [ang proseso]”
TL: Many are showing interests, many are inquiring about what their goals are going to be in order to speed up [the process] further.
Many of these firms originated in European or North American countries but did not disclose which ones.
One major example of a telco that is under process is Starlink, which the DTI has already communicated with. DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez said he will be assisting SpaceX in order to speed up the permits. SpaceX will be using Low Earth Orbit Satellites (LEO) in the country
Currently, SpaceX has been securing its papers in the Securities and Exchange Commission and it still needs permits from the National Telecommunications Commission and the DICT.
“Sa atin naman, inaantay natin makumpleto mga papeles para maka-umpisa sila maka-operate. Pagkatapos nun magtatayo pa sila earth stations, may mga ilang buwan pa silang kailanganin,” said Caintic.
TL: On our end, we are waiting for them to complete their papers so that they can start operating. After that, they still have to erect earth stations. They are going to need a few more months.
The DICT is also constructing common towers and fiber optic networks to make it easier for telcos, both local and foreign, to connect to the system.
