The Redmi K50 is a gaming phone with the price of a midranger!

To prove its competitive nature, Xiaomi even partnered with AMG Patronas.

Xiaomi has unveiled the hyped-for gaming phone called the Redmi K50 Gaming. The company has also struck a partnership with Mercedes Patronas F1 Racing team and one of the versions of the phone features an AMG-themed livery.

It is the successor to the beloved K40 Gaming which also has the same concept of great performance, low price tag. And like the latter unit, the K50 Gaming also features shoulder pads so that you can use the phone as a joystick. This works in many popular titles such as PUBG.

Because it is a performance phone, let’s focus first on the processing side. It would obviously be using a top-notch flagship processor. The K40 Gaming was equipped with a Snapdragon 888+ processor, so the K50 Gaming would be using the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip complemented with a Vapour Chamber that reduces stress and heat when the phone is used for very long periods. This chip is then paired with 8 or 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and either 128GB or 256GB UFS 3.1 internal storage.

The display of the phone is similar to other flagships, being a 6.67in. FHD+ (2400x1080px) OLED panel with 120Hz refresh rate and 480Hz touch sampling rate that is quite responsive. It has support for HDR10 and 10-bit colours. It is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.

The cameras have also been improved over the K40 Gaming. The main sensor is a 64mp Sony IMX686 coupled with an 8mp ultrawide and the useless 2mp macro. The front is a 20mp Sony IMX596 camera sensor.

For battery and charging, the phone is very much packed for gaming. While it has slightly less than 5000mAh capacity (4700mAh typical value), it has very fast charging rated at 120W and the phone can charge as fast as 17 minutes. In addition, you can also use the phone while charging because even Xiaomi demoed such an activity during the launch, where the phone is used to play a MOBA title and it took the phone 37 minutes to fully charge.

It will launch with MIUI 13 based on Android 12 and has in-display fingerprint scanner, NFC, and Wi-Fi 6E capability. It comes in three colours and one special edition AMG variant. The three colours include Dream Blue, Silver, and Black.

They are available in China starting tomorrow, 18th February, but there isn’t a word for international release. We might see the phone as the rumoured Poco X4 Pro.
