It is an honour to be there.
According to a Chinese newspaper, Honor has overtaken Xiaomi and Apple to become the third largest phone manufacturer in China. This is also after it split with its former parent company Huawei.
According to Cinno Research, last August, Oppo and Vivo were the reigning champions, having taken the 1st and 2nd positions and has racked up a total of 5.6 million and 5.3 million shipments respectively. Xiaomi finished in fourth place with 3.9 million phones shipped while Apple, the only non-Chinese company in the list, made it on 5th place with at least 3 million units.
Honor’s split from Huawei has not without setbacks and problems. First it had suffered a shortage and had its market share drop to 3% in the mainland. Luckily Honor recovered quickly and has been selling phones like hotcakes at least in Mainland China.
In addition, the Chinese market saw significant growth in smartphone sales with overall shipments rising to 28.6% on a year-on-year basis, This is partly due to the existence and significance of 5G smartphones which accounted for 79.6% of total market share.
Mediatek is also the highest-selling chipset for these smartphones. Mediatek-powered phones have reached an outstanding 118.3% YoY growth and has overtaken Qualcomm for first place last June. Meanwhile, thanks to the US ban, Huawei’s HiSilicon had a sharp decline in sales, selling only 2.1 million units and lost about 70% market share.
