The Snapdragon 895 will be based on a 4nm Samsung Node, while the 895+ will be based on a 4nm TSMC node

Since the uptiered version of the Snapdragon 888 has been announced, called the Snapdragon 888+, there are of course bound to be rumours what’s next after that. That chipset being the Snapdragon 895 series.

As you read from the title, Qualcomm’s upcoming flagship chip, the Snapdragon 895, will be based on a 4nm process. However, there will be two manufacturers for that. One is from Samsung, and the other is from TSMC.

To recall, the Snapdragon 865 was based on TSMC’s N7P process. However when the Snapdragon 888 came along, Qualcomm switched to using Samsung’s foundries. The newly announced Snapdragon 888+ 5G is also built using the same 5nm process as the base version.

According to a reliable tipster, Ice Universe, the two new flagship chipsets will be separately manufactured. The SD895 based on a Samsung 4nm process, and the SD895+ based on a TSMC 4nm process. Take note that these are rumours, Qualcomm is bound to change the name of this flagship chip, just like how the Snapdragon 888 is not called “Snapdragon 875” if we are following the naming scheme from SD865. In terms of CPU and GPU, nothing is announced yet. No other specs were announced yet either.

In related news, Mediatek is aiming to compete with Qualcomm as they too are manufacturing a 4nm flagship chipset to be ready next year. Samsung’s newly announced Exynos 2200 is also based on a 4nm process and AMD RDNA 2 GPU, which means an upgraded performance vs previous Exynos chipsets (about time they improved on it actually). Qualcomm also used Samsung’s 4nm foundry for its X65 and X62 modems, so it’s more likely that the next flagship chip is based on the same process.
