Wi-Fi 6 is currently the latest Wi-Fi technology the world has to offer, and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 685 was one of the first processors to include this feature. Since then, the use of Wi-Fi 6 has gone increasingly popular, and multiple routers now support it.
Now comes its successor, Wi-Fi 7 which is being developed by three semiconductor giants: Qualcomm, Broadcom and Mediatek. However, it will take a while before the technology is ready for public use. According to Qualcomm, it takes about 2-3 years before it can be ready.
Currently, Qualcomm is spending its time for research for the development of Wi-Fi 7. According to its Vice President, Rahul Patel, Qualcomm already had matured its development for both Wi-Fi 6 and 6E, the latter which was produced last year.
Wi-Fi 7 will have speeds double that of Wi-Fi 6 and would also provide a higher-quality and smoother experience. Commercially, Wi-Fi 7 may be known as Wi-Fi 802.11be. In contrast to Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 7 will support 16 data streams along with CMU-MiMO technology. Wi-Fi 7 will also have a 6GHz frequency band opposed to Wi-Fi 6’s 5GHz. Three of these frequency bands will work simultaneously thus expanding the width of a single channel from Wi-Fi 6’s 180MHz to 320MHz
Lastly, Wi-Fi 7 will have up to 30Gbps speeds opposed to Wi-Fi 6’s 9.6Gbps which is more than double Wi-Fi 6’s max speeds, thanks to an upgraded signal modulation method.
Again, don’t expect Wi-Fi 7 to appear anytime soon, as it is still under development.
