16GB RAM on a phone… And most PCs struggle to reach even with that amount. That’s sad and pathetic.
Yesterday, ASUS has announced their top-of-the-line beast of a series of gaming phones called the ROG Phone 7. You know what they say, 7 is a lucky number, so these phones should have some top-notch features to keep that luck intact.
As always, there’s the Ultimate version of the phone which comes built-in with the AeroActive portal that allows air to push directly into the vapour chamber making the phone cool a lot faster. However, these phones aren’t cheap and even Nubia RedMagic taunted that. Also, the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate has 16GB of RAM which is more than your average laptop or PC.
The iconic ROG Vision light display remains and will continue to be part of the series. Also, ASUS claims a significant improvement in terms of performance. Most notably, when it comes to the cooling system. It’s a lot bigger now and has a layer of BN (Boron Nitride). This cooling system now has dual graphene sheets covering an area of 16,000sqm that allows for a 10% improvement in thermal efficiency in combination with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2’s 15% energy efficient process.
Speaking of cooling, let’s discuss more of the AeroActive Cooler 7 more in detail. In the Ultimate variant, ASUS has combined the X Mode with the cooling system that can deliver unmatched levels of cooling efficiency. It’s a gaming device after all and it should last for very long periods without it heating from even the most demanding games like GRID Autosport 2 and Genshin Impact. The tests performed by ASUS may prove that. It’s better to run your own tests since the results above may be fabricated for marketing purposes.
Also, this cooler comes built-in with a quintamagnetic subwoofer with a large 13x38mm speaker which works alongside the phone’s stereo speakers. This theoretically will result in a very immersive sound experience, including strong bass and loud volume.
The gaming duo has identical specs. Namely, the 6.78″ Samsung E6 AMOLED with 165Hz refresh rate. Of course, the company is probably aware that you throw away your controllers and phones in a fit of rage for every losing match, so they did not forget to add extra protection. The Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection is here to stay and is here to remind you to always use protection to avoid unnecessary mistakes and accidents.
Another similar feature is of course the chipset. It is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset fabricated using a 2nd-gen 4nm TSMC process. What else would it be? The regular ROG Phone 7 comes with 16GB LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB UFS 4.0 storage. Thanks to this chipset, the phones are now able to support native Ray Tracing which allows for more realistic particles and reflections at the cost of some battery power and chipset efficiency.
The cameras remained the same as last time. Mainly, a 50MP Sony IMX766 unit, a 13MP Ultrawide camera, and a 5MP macro camera. Unlike previous iterations, ASUS wants the phone not only to be the best at gaming but also pretty competitive in other aspects like calling and photo and video capture, so the phone has functional cameras. Less than a flagship, but more than mainstream handsets. The front camera is an OmniVision OV32C which means it has 32MP resolution. Using a quad-bayer pixel binning, the camera combines four 8MP shots into one to achieve a single 32MP shot.
The battery is once again a 6000mAh cell split into two. This is charged via 65W USB-C port. There’s an additional port too so you could connect various accessories, including the AeroCooler. Speaking of connecting things, these phones have shoulder trigger pads that act as secondary controllers.
These trigger pads are called AirTrigger because they support a number of gestures like Dual Action, Press and Lift, and Gyroscope Aiming. The phone has an X-Axis linear motor so you could really feel each click and tap as if you’re using a mechanical keyboard.
3.5mm jack? Bet you it’s there. MicroSD Card slot? Sorry, not available. However, the included USB-C connector should make things a little handy for you. In terms of connectivity, the phones have 5G services, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, and NFC.
Both phones have a Storm White colour option but the regular ROG Phone 7 comes with an additional Phantom Black if you’d like. Both phones are sadly only IP54 rated instead of IP68 like their predecessors.
Availability:
Both phones are now available for sale in Europe. It seems like the only difference between the two phones now is how their cooling systems function as the Ultimate has a far larger cooling system. We kinda miss the older versions where 18GB RAM is an option.
Anyway, the ROG Phone 7 is available for EUR 999 (~Php 61.4K) but lacks the AeroCooler 7 system. If you want it though, you can always opt for the Ultimate which does include it inside the box however you have to pay a hefty price of EUR 1,399 (~Php 86K).
Its main competitor, the Nubia RedMagic 8 Pro, is priced at EUR 799 (~Php 49.1K) which explains the diss above. With EUR 1,399 you can get a console, a gaming PC, or additional gaming accessories which ZTE pointed out.
