2-year old Redmi Note 8 receives Android 11 update, MIUI 12, and Virtual RAM feature

Impressive for a budget device. Looks like Xiaomi is improving how their OTA updates are released and spread.

The original Redmi Note 8 is receiving Android 11 with MIUI 12. The phone is apparently the company’s best-seller hence the reason why they’re still giving it notice. It’s impressive that a two-year-old phone is receiving the latest Android update as well as Virtual RAM that’s only seen on newer releases. If you can recall, the company has released a refreshed version of the device with Mediatek Helio G85 and Android 10 at the helm.

We aren’t keen on the phone actually getting Android 12 because the phone already received two major updates, getting Android 11 is pretty much impressive already for a budget device released almost two years ago. Xiaomi has not released a detailed changelog but the most notable feature of this is the extra 1GB Virtual RAM expansion. Might not be big, but considering its age, it’s still adequate. Also, take note that the phone is getting MIUI 12 and not MIUI 12.5, so Indian Redmi Note 8 users might need to wait a little longer to use all of the latest MIUI features.

While the update is rolling out via OTA in the upcoming days, users can also get the update early via this download link (instantly downloads the firmware, so take note) and users with experience can manually flash said update.
