ColorOS 12 is official! To launch on multiple Oppo phones starting this month

Still using the signature crappy design instead of going full Material You. It’s also coming to OnePlus phones in China.

Oppo has updated its mobile Android interface and operating system called “ColorOS” to the latest version, ColorOS 12. The OS is available both in China as well as globally, with a set of features distinct and exclusive between the two regions. It is also one of the first Android Skins to be compatible and ready for Android 12.

During the launch live stream, Oppo said that the OS has three key objectives: simplistic and inclusive design, better performance and a better integration to its ecosystem. The “inclusive” part is there because Oppo has added 67 new languages that is available for the new UI. This new version also includes new and improved accessibility features included Colour Adjustment, High Contrast Ratios and its very own copy of Animoji called “Omoji”.

In terms of stability and accessibility, ColorOS has opened 27 of its system capabilities to third-party developers including its multimedia, network, AI and AR. With these in mind, Oppo hopes that opening its system capabilities to third-party devs would ensure capability across apps in its new OS.

In terms of icon design, Oppo chose to go with a rather simplistic “iOS-like” squircle design that is quite typical of other Chinese brands. These app icons are translucent and have complementing colours and gradients that are pleasing and easy on the eyes. According to Oppo, the OS is also easily and fully customisable.

In terms of performance, Oppo has announced that the new ColorOS 12 has significant performance improvements, including a 30% less RAM usage, 20% less background power drain and an increased battery life of around 12%. Read and Write performance will also be slightly faster now and less degrading over the course of three years.

As we mentioned earlier, there are features of ColorOS 12 that are region-locked. Here are those features that help distinct the global version to its Chinese counterpart:

China-Only:

Global-Only:

As seen here, the global variant uses the default Google Assistant which is already a spectacular voice assistant in its own right. Oppo may be further developing Breeno for global devices so that AI assistant will come as a future update. We just hope Oppo doesn’t go full Samsung and implement it like Bixby cause we all know how terrible that went.

COMPATIBLE DEVICES:

Early October 2021:

November 2021:

December 2021:

Early 2022:

Seen on the list, OnePlus will update its phones to ColorOS 12. DON’T FRET, DON’T FRET, as these are their Chinese variants which already run ColorOS before ColorOS 12 kicked in. The global version would still use OxygenOS (a large (no pun intended) breath of relief there)
