With all the leaks and rumours, and earlier’s sneak peek. OnePlus has finally revealed to us the camera-centric OnePlus 9 Pro, in collaboration with Hasselblad
Both the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro are hard and soft-tuned alongside Hasselblad, providing vivid image quality similar to those from DSLRs. Hasselblad is known for being the camera used for taking the famous “Blue Marble” photograph of the earth. Hasselblad has been the optics industry since 1841.
Below are a gallery of sample shots, taken from ambassadors/photographers of Hasselblad, using the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro
Also, aside from these sample shots, OnePlus encouraged their users to take smartphone photography themselves, without filters, just pure camera shots. They call this challenge the #TrueColors challenge, which will be uploaded on OnePlus’ social medias, so stay tuned.
We’ll show you more details, but first let’s get started what the phones actually are, starting with OnePlus 9 Pro
OnePlus 9 Pro
Camera:
The OnePlus 9 Pro is the pinnacle of the two OnePlus 9 phones (the 9R wasn’t revealed). There are four cameras at the back: a 48MP Sony IMX789 sensor, exclusive for OnePlus 9 Pro, measuring 1/1.43″. 23mm focal length, OIS support, and F/1.8 aperture. And the 50MP Sony IMX766 sensor measuring 1/1.56″ 14mm focal length, f/2.2 aperture and are freeform lenses, which enhance dynamic range.
For selfies, it comes with a single 16mp f/2.4 sensor
The other two cameras are the 8mp telephoto with an aperture of f/2.4 and OIS support and a 2mp depth sensor.
The Ultrawide lens gives sharp and ultra-clear details whether zoomed in or zoomed out. It keeps the details no matter how close you zoom the image in. According to OnePlus, this is done through the “freeform lens” mentioned earlier.
The freeform lens uses a unique set of curves to adjust to appropriate lighting, which according to them, brings down the distortion to 1%
The 48MP IMX789 sensor is customised by Sony and OnePlus. Thus, it may be unlikely we’ll see this sensor on other phones. The sensor can read 12-bit colour, and in RGB scale, a total of 36 bits, which is more than the usual 24-bit colour most smartphones can read. However, if you’re sharing the image with 12-bit colour and the display/website only supports 8-bit colour, then you will only get 8-bit colour.
Performance:
Both the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro are flagship phones, so it’s no surprise they will use the flagship Snapdragon 888 5G, and both devices will run Android 11 with OxygenOS on top.
OnePlus has added a new feature called “Hyper Touch” that adjusts the screen resolution appropriately for smoother transitions, for better response times. It also leads to snappier and smoother gaming controls. To achieve this, OnePlus used an AI algorithm to recognise touches, to render images and then using that information to sync the images onto the display. However, Hyper Touch is currently supported by a limited number of games such as League of Legends, Call of Duty, Brawl Stars and PUBG Mobile. OnePlus hopes more games adapt this feature in the future.
Another thing that OnePlus has added is the “Cool Play” feature, a heat dissipation method which is made from 5 layers of copper graphite to help in reduce heat the processor receives, thus making the phone remain cool even when playing for long periods.
The OnePlus 9 Pro, in 20 minutes of gameplay had a temperature of 40°C in comparison to the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, which had a hotter temperature of 42.3°C
Display:
The OnePlus 9 Pro uses the Fluid AMOLED first seen on the OnePlus 7 Pro. This time, they call it Fluid Display 2.0. Which has minor differences including using LTPO instead of LTPS. LTPO stands for Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide, and LTPS stands for Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon. These two types of displays have better “true-to-life” image quality and vivid colours.
The LTPO screen was first seen on Apple smartwatches. The main difference between LTPO and LTPS is that, LTPO displays offer better control in refresh rates and that it adjusts based on the movement of your fingers, allowing to save more battery life.
The way LTPO is manufactured is a bit complicated, but we’ll try to get it as simple as possible. LTPO is manufactured by combining both LTPS TFTs (Thin-Film-Transistors) and Oxide TFTs, which is the IGZOD material (Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide). LTPO is applicable for both LCDs and AMOLEDs
According to OnePlus, the LTPO display saves 50% more battery than the standard LTPS which is used on OLED displays. LTPS can be expensive to manufacture, making it the reason why AMOLED displays are often more expensive to replace if cracked.
The screen measures 6.7in. and has a resolution of 1440×3216 pixels and a ratio of 20:9. The phone is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. The display also has max brightness of 1300 nits. The phone has a refresh rate 120Hz and is IP68 dust/water resistant, a first for OnePlus.
Battery/Charging:
OnePlus uses its own proprietary Warp Charge technology for its fast charging solution. For the OnePlus 9 series, it uses 65W fast charging which charges the phone from empty to full in 29 minutes.
Both phones can also wirelessly charge within 50W of power, and this charges the phone from empty to full in 43 minutes. OnePlus lets you use their own wireless charging dock in either horizontal or vertical orientation, without compromises.
Pricing/Colors:
The OnePlus 9 Pro will start at €899 (~52K php) for the 8/128 configuration and €999 (~57.6K php) for the 12/256 version. OnePlus has not announced when the phone will be ready for sale, and in the Philippines, the only offline reseller of it is Digital Walker. Let’s wait for OnePlus Philippines and/or Digital Walker for the official availability and pricing
